Upper
Shore Aging Housing Corporation is a non-profit
organization dedicated to the provision of decent, safe
and affordable housing for Senior Citizens in the upper
five Counties of Maryland's Eastern Shore of the
Chesapeake Bay. Since its founding in 1977, USAHC has
successfully developed eight Senior Housing projects in
the region totaling 202 rental apartment units. Through
various partnerships with private developers, close
inter-working with community, religious leaders, and
local governments, USAHC has secured funding through the
Department of Housing and Urban Development and the US
Department of Agriculture's Rural Development Service
which enables it to offer its apartments to eligible
applicants at rental rates based on their ability to pay,
thereby making them equally available to virtually anyone
living on Social Security Income.
The
success of USAHC's projects is based on their locations,
that being in the small rural towns which make up the
face of the Eastern Shore. The ability to remain near to
family, and friends enables USAHC Seniors to stay
independent while maintaining the security of the
community, familiar surroundings, and medical facilities
nearby.
Each
apartment is especially designed with Seniors in mind to
provide for comfortable independent living. They have one
bedroom (except efficiencies), full bath, kitchen, living
room, adequate closets and storage. Each project has
special apartments designed for the wheelchair which have
no stairs, wide turning radius, roll-in showers, grab
rails in the bath, and open front sink counters in the
kitchen. All apartments have safety features including
emergency pull strings in the Baths and Bedrooms. Heat
Pumps provide central heating and air-conditioning. All
kitchens are provided with modern appliances including
refrigerator, range and garbage disposer. Coin operated
laundry facilities are located in the Community Building
and is available to all tenants. The Community Room is
available to all residents for personal use such as
family dinners, birthday parties, or get-togethers at no
charge on a first come first serve basis.
Aging
and other Social Services like transportation, light
cleaning, and medicine maintenance, are available on a
limited basis to eligible individuals and is provided by
the local County Department's of Aging or Social
